Dry coolers are simple and reliable equipment. Their operating principle is based on a sensible heat exchange between air and water where air is drawn by fans through a finned coil, while water (or a mixture of water and glycol) flows through the tubes that make up the coil and cools when the ambient air (cooler) touches its surface. The fins are used to increase the overall heat exchange surface so that the equipment can be as compact and efficient as possible. The water circuit is closed and never in contact with external elements. The only consumption is the electricity to operate the fans. These can be of the AC or EC type while their control is ensured by a controller or a frequency converter that modulates the fan speed based on actual operating conditions. Their performance and return temperature are a consequence of the installation location. The approach temperature is usually around 5°C.

Supply of the cooler is limited to the parts listed above. Building and electrical works, pumps, collectors external to the cooler, valves, hoisting gear, and any scaffolding and labor are therefore excluded.
